Auburn, ME – In the featured matchup for the home fans, the CMCC Mustangs squared off against the Knights from VTC in quarterfinal action of the YSCC Men's "Elite 8" at Kirk Hall on Saturday night. A back and forth battle for the majority of the first half, the Mustangs hit shot after shot to keep themselves in the game against an always fundamentally sound VTC club. Guard Justin Cocroft hit several big 3 pointers in the latter stages of the first period getting the Mustangs all square with the Knights with 3 minutes remaining. A late surge would give VTC the lead going into halftime at a score of 33-29. Samson Oleyami led the Mustangs with 9 first half points and Brandon Matano had 9 for VTC.

VTC extended their lead in the second half to near double digits, but in Mustang fashion, the CM men made a run of their own to keep the game in reach. Both Cocroft and Oleyami hit big shots for CM trimming the Knight lead to as little as 3.

Basketball is a game of runs. Each team would go on several before VTC took control of the basketball game late. CM made it interesting late with some dead eye shooting of their own, but as the final horn sounded, it was VTC on top of CM by a score of 77-63. The Mustangs were led by Samson Oleyami with 18 points and Justin Cocroft with 10. Brandon Matano led VTC with 22, Alex Tyrell with 19, and Sam Marler chipped in 13. VTC will play the winner of EMCC and Paul Smiths College tomorrow at 6pm.
