Women’s Soccer Hammered by Husson

Auburn, ME – CMCC Women's Soccer dropped its home opener to Husson University (NCAA DIII) 7-0 on Tuesday night. The Eagles dominated possession, getting six different players on the scoresheet and testing freshman goalkeepers Devyn Eliasen and Kloee Pelletier with 24 shots on target.

Both teams used at least 20 players in the early-season game, with the Mustangs playing on back-to-back nights coming off their visit to Thomas College, another in-state NCAA opponent. The visitors tested CMCC's defense right from the get-go with Eliasen making several fine saves to keep things scoreless through the first quarter of an hour.

Hailey Tarbox opened the scoring in the 19th minute, cutting on to her left foot inside the penalty area and placing her shot inside the near post. Lyndsee Reed made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, pouncing on a corner kick delivery that pinballed around the area, and sending her shot off the post and across the goalmouth into the side netting.

Both teams swapped goalkeepers in the second half with both coaches looking to test as many players as possible. Pelletier replaced Eliasen for Central Maine and Gabby Smith came in for Madison Weigler for Husson. The Eagles' keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch in the 53rd minute. Alyson LeBlond put Sarah Labbe through on goal with a pass between defenders. Smith charged off her line to clear the danger outside the box, but saw her kick rebound off Haley Wing. With Labbe bearing down on her, Smith attempted to grab the ball but was outside the penalty area leading the referee to blow his whistle. After a discussion with the linesman, he produced only a yellow card and a free kick for CMCC.

That would prove to be the Mustangs best scoring chance of the game. Kennedy Freston scored six minutes later in the 59th and Addie Laslie put the game away less than a minute later with a shot into the top corner to make it 4-0. Jillian Long and Paige Dunn also scored in the final half hour on either side of Tarbox's second strike of the game, giving Husson the 7-0 margin of victory.

Central Maine next prepares to head down to Massachusetts on the weekend for the Cougar Classic NJCAA tournament hosted by Holyoke Community College.
