Esports Wins Marvel Rivals Title at MECA Tournament

Bangor, ME – Mustangs Esports captured first place at the Maine Esports Collegiate Association's "Maine Mayhem" Marvel Rivals tournament hosted by Husson University. Central Maine took home the crown at the event that also featured teams from the University of Southern Maine, Thomas College, and York County Community College, going an undefeated 6-0 at the double elimination tournament over both days of the weekend.

The team of Andrew "Nxjang" Bishop, Isamiil "Okami" Hassan, Ethan "M0kie" Lemont, Ryan "cryshina" Lunzaga, Hassan "FlawlessMusa" Moussa, Piper "ImmortalFern" Selkow, Maing "Urabsent" Tang, Leticionna "LadyRein" Dalton, and Jamie "C0rnFl4kes" Cole was dominant throughout, dropping only one map each day. Saturday featured a round robin to determine seedings for Sunday's knockout bracket. York County and Thomas were defeated 3-0 and 3-0, with USM being the only team to take a map off of them on day one before falling 3-1. As the #1 seed, the Mustangs dispatched the Hawks 3-0 to start day two, then knocked off the Huskies 3-1 to book their spot in the grand final.

USM overcame Thomas 3-2 on the loser's side of the double elimination bracket to set up a rematch but faced a tall task, needing to defeat CMCC twice to claim the trophy. The Mustangs made it a moot point by dispatching the Huskies 3-0. Okami, a top-500 Marvel Rivals player, was the MVP of the weekend, having picked up game MVP honors on the majority of maps playing mostly Invisible Woman. However, it was a full-team effort that collected the win, coached by Michael Brown and guided by captain Nxjang, with all subs making at least one appearance in a match.

In the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, Mustangs Esports was represented by Peter "Shadow974" Parent and Aaron "Alphabot" Obert. Alphabot reached the furthest in the double elimination tournament, winning his quarterfinal match before being defeated by eventual grand final winner "Jaytee" from Husson.

This is Central Maine's first victory at a Maine Esports Collegiate Association tournament in MECA's second year of existence, having been formed in the fall of 2024. Husson was hosting a MECA event for the first time after Thomas College got the honors last April for an SSBU-only event. It was not the Mustangs first trip to Bangor though, having claimed top spot at the Eagles' Valorant LAN tournament in March 2025, as part of the Husson Campus Series event.

The Mustangs Esports Marvel Rivals team is the last squad still competing this spring with one match remaining in ECAC Division C play. Central Maine takes on Messiah University out of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, April 22nd.
