Anthony York, a 6'5"center from Jay, ME and a member of the Spruce Mountain High School basketball team has committed to play for the Mustangs. Anthony is enrolled in the Criminal Justice program at CM. He was the mainstay in the middle for the talent laden Phoenix leading them into them into the Class B basketball tournament. He recorded 14.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. More impressively, he averaged 1.5 charges per game. Along with playing basketball at Spruce Mountain, Anthony played four years of football and three years of baseball. He was named to the All-Defensive Team his senior year for basketball and received the "Coach's Award".
According to Spruce Mountain Basketball Coach Scott Bessey, "With Anthony, CMCC is getting not just a good player they are getting a high character, team first individual who may be the most coachable player I've ever been around. Anthony made his teammates better, knowing he was back there to protect the paint and rim. He took over 60 charges in his varsity career, which is the ultimate selfless act a defender can give his team. Anthony improved every single time he stepped on the court. He responded to every challenge the coaches put in front of him."
When asked why he chose CM, Anthony responded, "I picked CM because they had the program I wanted to study. Criminal Justice is something I have always been interested in and being able to study the program I wanted, being close to home and playing college basketball has always been a goal to me. I am very lucky to play at CM. "
CM Head Men's Coach Dave Gonyea adds, "Anthony is a big strong kid who will fit in nicely with our system. It helps he was well coached in high school and has an expectation to win. I am especially pleased with his desire to be physical. Rebounding and taking charges in college is much different than high school but his mindset and attitude will carry over to his college game. I suspect his best days are in front of him."
