Auburn, ME – The Central Maine Community College spring athletic teams combined to take home an impressive haul of individual hardware, winning 12 individual awards on the field, and being acknowledged for four honors in the classroom.
Baseball led the way with the bulk of the awards, winning their second straight YSCC Tournament championship and winning the regular season title to boot. The Mustangs finished the season 27-10 overall with a fantastic 17-3 mark in Yankee Small College Conference play, claiming the program's second-ever win at the USCAA Small College World Series. The impressive campaign led to Ryan Palmer being named YSCC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
T.J. Kramarz led the team in four major offensive categories with a .412 batting average, 48 runs, 42 hits, and 31 stolen bases. The freshman infielder and hometown product out of Edward Little High School was selected as a USCAA 2nd-Team All-American and had the second-most votes in being named a YSCC All-Conference selection.
Brendan Mahaney joined Kramarz in national recognition, as a USCAA All-American Honorable Mention. The power hitter from Old Town, ME had an impressive six home runs and 44 RBIs to also claim All-Conference honors. Jake Calver, the sophomore outfielder from Australia, also booked a spot on the All-Conference while Cody Cleaveland was a YSCC Honorable Mention after the pair had excellent spring semesters on the diamond.
The Mustangs YSCC Tournament victory over York County brought another pair of individual accolades. Catcher Zac Gorman was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The captain from Australia demonstrated his leadership behind the plate, throwing out runners, managing the pitchers, and providing a calming presence to help guide the team to the win. Newcomer Augustino Bonadie was selected as Tournament MVP, capping off a great end of the season for the pitcher from Moncton, NB once he returned from injury.
Softball endured a tough rebuilding campaign with a young team of mostly first-year players. Making things more difficult was the absence of a fourth YSCC team competing in the sport, leaving the Mustangs to battle two top five nationally ranked teams in the UMA Moose and the defending Small College World Series champion SMCC Seawolves.
With less than the minimum number of teams required by the league for there to be a YSCC Tournament or an All-Conference list of players, Central Maine helped fill the postseason gap by holding the Mustang Softball Invitational Tournament in Auburn. Freshman pitcher Melody Rousselle was named the team's "Player of the Game" award winner from their matchup against UMaine-Augusta. It was a fitting honor for the Kennebunk, ME native who started 14 of the team's 21 contests in the circle.
The Track and Field teams also took home some glory despite a shortened spring season. The women's squad finished runners-up for the team title for the second-straight year at the YSCC Championships at American International College in Springfield, MA.
Eva Fleurent was selected as the YSCC Women's Track Athlete of the Year after a solid season. The Biddeford High School product picked up right where she had left off on the cross country trail in the fall to dominate in the short distances. Fleurent won two individual conference events, claiming the 800 meters in 2:53.53 and the 1,500 meters with a 5:47.83 time.
Breanna Dwyer added to her national championship winning year with Women's Basketball by claiming the 200-meter dash conference title. The Australian triumphed over a packed field by finishing in 28.57 seconds. She was joined by two other basketball teammates in Keilani Horne and Mikela Alvarado, who teamed up with Fleurent to win the 4x100 meter relay event, defeating meet champions ACPHS with a time 57.49 seconds.
The men's team was unable to defend its first YSCC team championship in program history from a year ago. The Mustangs did not return with any individual titles either, finishing runners-up in several events. Sophomore Zachary Peirce was the team's leading headline grabber from the season. The Foxcroft Academy product set a school record in the javelin with a throw of 42.42 meters (139 feet and two inches) in the second meet of the year, earning him YSCC Player of the Week honors. He was joined by fellow captain Hunter Holt on the USCAA Academic All-American list as well.
