AUBURN, ME - It's one way the uninitiated half-seriously fill out their March Madness college basketball pool brackets: Select the winners by comparing the nicknames and deciding who would win a real-life confrontation between an animal and a storm or a demon and an inanimate object. Not to oversimplify things, but that approach might have worked if you were handicapping Wednesday night's women's game at Kirk Hall. Central Maine Community College's Mustangs ran freely, passed crisply and found open shots routinely. The short-handed University of Maine at Augusta Moose were content to bleed the shot clock, exercise the patience of kindergarten teachers and pound the ball inside.
Pedal-to-the-metal prevailed. CMCC hit its stride with dizzying efficiency after a frosty beginning and cruised, 88-50, past its Yankee Small College Conference rival.
According to Central Maine guard Sara Martin of Strong. "No matter who we play, we always concentrate on what we do, and we always run."
Martin was the chief beneficiary of an increasing number of uncontested perimeter shots, draining six 3-pointers on her way to 22 points.
She's hit 16 shots from beyond the arc in the last three games. CMCC (7-4) rained down 13 as a group against UMA.
Alex Donald of Litchfield, a first-semester transfer from Maine Maritime, contributed four treys to the win.
