Concord, NH - An 18-point 1st half lead was cut to just 2 points in the 4th quarter, as the Lady Mustangs hung on to defeat the Lynx of NHTI 61-56 in their regular season finale. Even forcing 29 turnovers, CM could not put away NHTI who scrapped their way back into the game.
Never finding a true flow to the game, the Lady Mustangs looked lost on offense, often uncharacteristically wearing down the shot clock. Luckily, 4 players connected in double-figures, led by Brooke Reynolds (Poland, ME) with 19 points, 8 reounds, and 3 steals. Jenny Schlim (Nottingham, NH) who was playing in her home state, hit for 13 points, 8 rebounds, and took 2 offensive fouls. Tianna Harriman (Auburn, ME) drained 3 triples, finishing with 11 points, and Eraleena Gethers-Hairston (Auburn, ME) scored 10 and pulled down 9 rebounds.
Coach Morong on the win, "Well, this is about what we expected. NHTI is a scrappy team that can really get hot, and they did not disappoint this evening. We had our chance to put them away early, with two of their starters in foul trouble, and I knew we were in for a tough second half when we let them cut the lead to 14 before the half. I think we were wrapped up in our emotional win on Wednesday vs. SMCC and looking towards the tournament instead of taking care of business. Clearly, I did not prepare our women for this game correctly, and we were lucky to get out of there with a win."
Melissa Martel led the Lynx with 16 points, connecting on 4 big triples that propelled NHTI during their run.
With the win CM finished the regular season with an overall record of 27-1 and an unblemished Yankee Conference record of 14-0. Winning the Yankee Conference Regular Season Championship gives them the top seed in next weeks YSCC Elite 8. They will be play Hampshire College on Thursday (time TBA) in the opening round.
